A true French classic, even if one does not immediately associate malbec with wines of France. Vibrant garnet hues gleam out of the glass and invite one to explore further. The first notes on the nose are of mulberries, and then develop on to reveal redcurrant and blackcurrant aromas. There is that intriguing bitter-sweet character of crème de cassis with a touch of underlying parma violets. The taste profile is equally intriguing and enticing. Complex without being clumsy, extremely fine red- fruit flavours fill the mouth, raspberries come to the fore and are backed up with a touch of buttery chocolate truffle richness. A mid-weight harmonious wine, an expression of purity and youthful fruitiness.

Sourced from the lesser-beaten territory of Pays Cathare that surround the towns of Carcassonne and Limoux. The beautiful rugged environment with its argilo -calcaire sub strata is home to the AOP Longuedoc and Limoux, but the vineyards do not stop with the AOP geographical limits and it is from these outskirts that we have sourced some exceptionally interesting wines. One of the great advantages of the region is that fact that it benefits from enviable geographic and climatic conditions allying the warm Mediterranean sunshine which is tempered by the altitude and the cooler nights so characteristic of the foothills of the Pyrenees. These are ideal conditions allowing for the longer, slower ripening of the grapes, thereby providing a superb base for the elaboration of wines that offer intensity, complexity and finesse. The traditional ‘noble' grape varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have a natural affinity here in the Haute Vallée de l'Aude, as does the less widespread Malbec (originally known in France as Cot).

The Malbec varietal has a long-standing tradition in Longedoc and Corbières where is is used knowingly in the delicate art of blending. Here they have decided not to blend, but to offer this Malbec as a stand alone, a wine to appreciate for its difference.

Try with grilled chops or sausages. It works with seared tuna too.
