Minuty a Provence Icon

Few wines capture the essence of summer quite like a crisp, refreshing glass of Provence rosé. With its delicate pink hue and vibrant flavours, this wine has become synonymous with leisurely afternoons and Mediterranean charm. But behind its effortless appeal lies a rich history that dates back over two millennia. Among the esteemed producers of Provence rosé, Château Minuty stands as a beacon of tradition and excellence.

The Origins of Provence Rosé

The story of Provence rosé begins in 600 BC, when the Greeks first planted vineyards in the region. At the time, winemaking techniques were rudimentary, and rosé was the only style produced. As the centuries passed, the Romans further refined viticulture in Provence, cementing the region’s reputation for quality wines.

Rosé wine experienced a resurgence during the Middle Ages, thanks to the efforts of monasteries. By the 20th century, Provence had firmly established itself as the leading producer of rosé, with a focus on quality and refinement. The 1970s marked a turning point, as winemakers prioritized excellence, elevating rosé from a simple table wine to a globally celebrated beverage.

Today, Provence is the largest producer of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) rosé wines in France, accounting for 43% of the country’s PDO rosé production. The region’s Mediterranean climate, mineral-rich soil, and cooling Mistral winds create the perfect conditions for growing grapes that yield elegant and aromatic rosé wines.

Château Minuty: A Legacy of Excellence

Nestled in the heart of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, Château Minuty has been a cornerstone of Provence rosé since its founding in 1936 by Gabriel Farnet. Originally built under Napoleon III, the estate underwent extensive replanting after World War II, ensuring the highest quality vines.

In 1955, Château Minuty was among the 23 estates awarded the prestigious Cru Classé designation, a testament to its commitment to excellence. The estate flourished under the leadership of Monique and Étienne Matton, who replanted traditional Provençal grape varieties such as Tibouren, Rolle, and Grenache, further solidifying Minuty’s reputation.

The modern era of Minuty began in the 1990s, when Jean-Etienne and François Matton took the helm. They introduced state-of-the-art winemaking techniques, expanded the estate’s global presence, and ensured that Minuty wines remained synonymous with quality.

In 2023, Château Minuty entered a new chapter when LVMH acquired a majority stake, further cementing its status as a luxury wine brand. Today, Minuty produces approximately 8 million bottles of rosé per year, with a strong presence in Europe, the Caribbean, and Dubai.
