Tasting Notes

Lemony freshness with hints of rich ripe pineapple, nectarine and fresh apricot. The palate is wonderfully luscious and viscous, well integrated, with flavours of lemon marmalade and ripe stone fruit. It is enormously satisfying and oozes quality.

Producer details

La Bascula is the name given to the Spanish wine range produced by Ed Adams MW and Bruce Jack. The term means weighing scales, and represents the balance between indigenous Spanish varieties and modern winemaking. The philosophy is small volumes and really high quality. The wines are made to truly represent excellent value for money and really show off the areas they come from. The result is fine, ripe, concentrated wines. La Báscula started life with just two wines in the range, both Monastrell based red wines from Jumilla, south-east Spain. They now offer a full range - with recent additions from Rioja, Catalonia and an exquisite dessert wine from near Alicante.

In the vineyard

The viura grapes are from old bush vines grown on mainly alluvial soils, with large round pebbles, which reflect the sun and keep the vines warm at night. Other areas of the vineyard are more sandy and the verdejo vines are grown on a cordon system. Vines grow at 800-900m altitude. Harvest tends to be early September.

In the winery

A pneumatic press is used to gently press the grapes. The wine is 40% barrel fermented in a mixture of American and French oak, for approximately three months, with lees stirring. The wine in tank is also kept with the lees during this time. The wines are blended together in January and bottled mid March.

In the press

2012 Vintage: "From old vines. Interesting notes of bread and vanilla on the nose - fun. Some citrus notes, presumably from the old Viura vines. Much more intriguing than the average Rueda. Well conceived. Great stuff and likely to be great value. 16.5 points. Drink 2014 - 2016." Jancis Robinson, www.jancisrobinson.com, 30th May 2014 2012 Vintage: “The project of Englishman Ed Adams MW and South African winemaker Bruce Jack, La Báscula is sourcing fruit and making excellent wines from across Spain's regions. This is a nicely tempered Rueda, without too much pungency or the 'sweaty' character that sometimes inflicts less carefully made wines from the region. Juicy, full and sweet-fruited on the palate, there's delightfully racy citrus core, zipping with lime and grapefruit, given some creamy depth by partial fermentation in oak barrels.” 89 points.
