Weekly Treats - wine at silly prices (but you can only have 2 bottles)! Image

Organic options that don't cost the earth!

To continue our theme of all things Organic and natural, this week's pair of treats include a staff favourite with the delightfully fresh 'Otto' Soave and the new sulphite-free 'Natura' Rioja from our good friends at Ontanon.

We want to continue to say thank you for all the support we have been given over the last year the best way we know how...by offering incredible wines at honest prices with some amazing weekly treat wines thrown in! We aren't trying to move stock with these wines, we haven't inflated any prices to give a discount, we genuinely aren't making any money on these wines... hence why we are only letting you take TWO BOTTLES MAXIMUM

Pra Soave Otto

An absolutely classic Soave - though no longer 'classico' as the rules and regulations don't allow for screwcap closures! Same excellent quality though!

There's a fresh, flowery and subtly tropical nose with ripe pears and a touch of wood smoke. The palate is attractively textured and juicy, showing zesty 'leesy' intensity and a hint of almonds. Richly-flavoured and concentrated with a crisp, incisive and mineral finish.

This 20 hectare estate in the commune of Monteforte D'Alpone in the very heart of the Soave Classico district is run by Graziano Pra. Universally regarded as one of a handful of world-class producers in Soave who have revitalised the region. Otto is a consistent award-winner and described in the Gambero Rosso guide as 'an absolutely magnificent wine of which every wine enthusiast should have a few bottles tucked away'.

The grapes are softly pressed and fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless steel vats. This helps to preserve freshness and aromas. Maturation takes place in tank on the lees until bottling in February of the following year to impart further complexity and flavours..........more

Ontañón Rioja Natura

From the Pérez Cuevas family in Rioja Oriental, this wine is produced with no added sulphites.

Intense aromas of bramble, fig and plum fruit lift from the glass. There are also herbal, spicy, coffee and balsamic notes. The palate is complex, with notes of ripe blueberry and blackcurrant balanced by savoury, meaty characters, supple tannins and an appealing mineral character. Bright acidity leads to a long, lingering finish.

Raquel, Ruben and Maria Pérez Cuevas are part of the 3rd generation of the Cuevas family to make wine in Rioja Baja. Their father, Gabriel, inherited parcels of vineyards just outside the town of Quel on the higher slopes of the Sierra de Yerga mountain range. He was determined to produce wine that embodied the region, where he believed some of the highest quality wines from Rioja are made, and soon acquired more vineyards in the area.

Sulphites aren't used for the production of this wine, in either the vineyard, or during the winemaking process, so the grapes are treated very carefully. They're picked by hand and transported to the winery in small crates. Here they undergo a rigorous selection process, and after destemming, are put into the press with dry ice. Fermentation takes place over seven days, with pigeage, to achieve a very high level of colour and aroma extraction. Only the free-run must is used, and malolactic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in barrels for two weeks. Natural fining agents and filtration are employed before the wine is transferred to American oak casks, where it is aged for fifteen months before bottling.........more
